Rebecca McKenzie is a friend I've had for years. & for years, I've stalked her Facebook for updated photos of her house. Her favorite (& my favorite) holiday is Halloween so I especially find myself drooling at her decor around the holidays. However, a few weeks ago, she posted photos of her current set-up & they were to die for! I immediately reached out & begged her to let me feature her crazy beautiful home on my blog! It is every vintage/mid-century modern lover's dream! She was more than thrilled to participate so, behold... basically my most favorite house ever!
If you are the least bit familiar with my style, you'll have immediately noticed these photos are slightly different than how I usually edit. With the retro colors & style though, I simply couldn't resist the rich tones & dramatic light! I definitely wanted these to feel like they came straight out of a vintage magazine!
KEEP scrolling for drool-worthy photos & to find out how Rebecca created her perfect home!
Q: What style describes "you"?
A: Mid-century modern is my favorite style for home decor. I’ve loved the Brady Bunch since I was a kid & it’s my inspiration! I try to stay MCM & add some eclectic pieces along the way.
Q: What are some of your favorite pieces & why?
A: My favorite pieces are the items Chris (Rebecca's extremely creative handyman husband!) has made for me. My #1 favorite is my couch. MCM style furniture is hard to come by in our area so he designed his own - & it’s amazing! It embodies midcentury Japanese design & he also put his own touches.
She also adds:
Chris really loves midcentury modern Japanese style design. It’s minimalistic, yet functional. The furniture isn’t bulky & doesn’t take over a room - but it’s comfortable & fits us perfectly! He starts drafts of his designs on whatever he can find - paper plates & napkins are his favorite things to grab - & he works from there. Once he starts he is pretty quick at completing an item (a few days when he doesn’t have other things going on) because once he starts it takes him over and he has to see the finished product! He designs everything down to the cushions. We always try to go as a family & pick out wood and stain colors so we can all stay involved.
Q: What's the history of your home?
A: We purchased our home in 2009. It was built in 1986. When we got it it SCREAMED typical 90s decor & had a plain pallet & all-light cream carpet. We have slowly used our favorite colors, changed fixtures, & added our own touches inside to give it a midcentury feel.
Q: What's next?
A: Chris is working on a MCM room divider now with a metal screen & we plan to update some our colors...think calming gray & split pea! (I promise they’re amazing!)
Finally, Rebecca says:
I love my home because I always feel like my living room & dining room are like walking into a time warp. We spend most of our time in that area & it just doesn’t feel like a home built in 1986! My dream is to live in a midcentury style home - but we are working with what we have until our dream can come true!
My favorite thing about Rebecca's home is the fact it's very much lived-in. The style is extremely functional & compliments every single member of the family, including the kids, Frank (the dog), & Slayer, (the cat) - & two more cats not pictured!
